Palagiano in the province of Taranto: the citrus capital of the gulf, among IGP clementines, cultivated countryside and the closeness of the Ravines Park.
History
Palagiano lies in the fertile plain stretching between Taranto and Metaponto, in a territory of strong agricultural vocation that belongs to the Terra delle Gravine Regional Natural Park.
What to see
The town is known above all as one of the centres of Tarantine citrus growing: the surrounding plain is covered with sweeps of orange and clementine groves that give rise to the Clementines of the Gulf of Taranto IGP, one of the territory's finest products.
The town centre has an agricultural, traditional character, with churches and historic buildings telling the life of a community bound to the land. In the surroundings lie masserie and rock-cut remains, in continuity with the ravines landscape.
Palagiano is an interesting stop for anyone wanting to know the province's agricultural soul, perhaps pairing it with a visit to the nearby rock-heritage centres.
