Roccaforzata in the province of Taranto: a small village of the Tarantine Albania, with the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Camera and the hilltop view.
History
Roccaforzata is one of the small towns of the "Tarantine Albania": it was repopulated in the fifteenth century by Albanian exiles fleeing the Ottoman invasion of the Balkans, like its neighbours San Marzano, Faggiano and Monteparano.
What to see
The village stands on a hill offering a pleasant view over the surrounding countryside. The most significant monument is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Camera, a place of devotion set between Roccaforzata, Monteparano and Lizzano, tied to the community's ancient religious traditions.
The town keeps the compact atmosphere of the Ionian hinterland's small centres, with its churches and traditional urban fabric. Its hilltop position makes it a panoramic stop along the Arbëreshë village itineraries.
