Sava: in the heart of the Primitivo Lands

Primitivo Lands, 30 km from Taranto

Sava in the province of Taranto: one of the centres of the Primitivo Wine Road, among cellars, bush-trained vineyards and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Pasano.

History

Sava is one of the towns making up the production area of Primitivo di Manduria DOP, in the heart of the Primitivo Lands. The surrounding landscape is that typical of the wine-growing Ionian arc: sweeps of vineyards, many still trained with the traditional bush (alberello) system.

What to see

The wine. Sava's economy and identity revolve around viticulture. The territory hosts cellars that open their doors to visitors for tastings and guided visits, often paired with the territory's typical produce.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Pasano. Just outside the town stands this sanctuary, one of the area's most deeply felt places of devotion, set in the countryside.

The town centre preserves the traditional churches and buildings, in a quiet, authentic atmosphere. Sava is a natural stop for anyone following the Primitivo Wine Road, perhaps pairing it with a visit to Manduria and Lizzano.
